ImplanonChemical Name : Etonogestrel ImplantManufacturer : SCHERING PLOUGH
Implanon Information : Implanon is a contraceptive that is an implant. The implant is a small plastic rod containing the hormone etonogestral and it is inserted just underneath the skin of the upper inner arm and provides protection against pregnancy for three years it is left in place. To prevent pregnancy, Implanon stops ovulation (release of the egg from the ovary) and thins out the lining of the uterus, thus the egg will not be able to implant and grow. Implanon also makes the cervical mucus at the entrance to the uterus thicker so that sperm have a difficult time getting through to fertilize the egg. Implanon is an effective contraceptive, with less than 1% failure rate. You will most likely have irregular and unpredictable periods while using Implanon. Tell your doctor if your periods are very heavy or long-lasting, or if you miss a period (you may be pregnant).
If you need to have any type of medical tests or surgery, or if you will be on bed rest, you may need to stop using this medication for a short time. Any doctor or surgeon who treats you should know that you are using Implanon.
Implanon Side Effects : The most common side effect caused by Implanon is irregular bleeding which can vary from no bleeding at all to troublesome frequent bleeding. Other side effects are rare but users sensitive to the hormone in the rod may experience side effects like headaches, weight gain, breast tenderness, acne and depression.
